In our shoe manufacturing process we use exclusively non-toxic, vegetable tanned leather from Europe. This leather is extremely soft and flexible. Purely natural ingredients are used in the dying process such as rhubarb, oak from the Mediterranean region and other natural dyes.
The leather which we use for sewing has been awarded quality seals by ECARF (European Centre for Allergy Research Fundation) and IVN (International Association of Natural Textile Industry). Our shoes can be worn without socks and are suitable for children with allergies and sensitive skin.
The leather surface is clean, free of chemical sealing agents, thus ensuring excellent breathability.
The focus of the leather manufacturer lies on low emissions, social norm compliance and meeting the highest standards in eco-friendly production.
Up to 80-90% of all leather used in manufacture all over the world is tanned using chrome, which in unsupervised processes may oxidate to highly toxic hexavalent chromium (Chromium VI). As one of the most common causes of skin diseases, Chromium VI may cause skin irritation or an allergic skin reaction. Though tanning by chrome is thought to be harmless and leather is tested for chromium levels, its toxicity may be activated in the presence of sweat.
Heavy metals are toxic even at low concentrations and therefore, it is hard to define safe levels. Heavy metals cannot be degraded into harmless compounds, hence they have long-term effects on human health and the environment.
One of the characteristics of vegetable tanned leather are slight surface imperfections and marks on the leather. This also makes it easy to distinguish naturally dyed leather from leather dyed using industrial dyes. As vegetable tanned leather ages, it develops a rich patina over the years.
Our shoes are intended for indoor and outdoor use. We recommend to avoid wet conditions. Should the shoes get wet, fill them with crumpled paper or paper towels and allow them to air dry at room temperature.
Possible stiffness of the shoes should soften with repeated wear.
Use a soft cloth to remove slight impurities. For more persistent dirt, use a soft shoe brush.
Let suede parts of the shoes dry first before attempting to clean them. Use a suede brush to remove dirt and other surface impurities.
When a child is learning to walk, flexible shoes with a soft sole and no heels are essential. Soft-sole shoes allow to develop strength in muscles of the feet and ankles and support the development of the foot coordination function. This is not possible with hard-sole shoes.
Wearing hard-sole shoes which restricts the natural foot development in infants may have a permanent effect on muscular and spinal development. Walking barefoot is best for a child´s foot development. And the next best thing to walking barefoot is walking in flexible leather shoes with a soft sole.
The soles of MOE shoes are cut to follow the natural shape of the foot. This allows the leather to stretch evenly across the toe line. Soft leather allows the foot to grow, encouraging the free range of motion, and leaves space for natural development.
One of our priorities is to work with the safest materials of the highest possible quality. That´s why at MOE we decided to sew our shoes from a non-toxic, environmentally friendly, vegetable tanned leather. Our leather is certified and non-allergenic.
MOE shoes have a 3-layer sole. The insole is made of soft, vegetable tanned split leather which comes in contact with the child´s skin on the inside of the shoe. The midsole consists of a thin, 2mm-layer which ensures thermal insulation and provides shock absorption to reduce impact on the foot on harder surfaces. The outsole is made of vegetable tanned suede.
Place your child´s foot atop a sheet of paper, ideally placing a solid object behind the heel, and trace the outline of the foot. Each foot may have a different length. Mark the points at the heel and the big toe.
Measure the distance between these two points to get the length of the foot. Now measure the marks for the widest part to get the width of the child´s foot.
Our shoes are currently available in four or five sizes (depending on the shoe model) ranging from newborns to approximately 3-4 years. Since each child is different, we recommend to measure the feet and refer to our sizing chart. We do not recommend to choose the shoe size based only on age or standardised size conversion charts determined by shoe manufacturers.
To get the right size of MOE shoes, we recommend to add an allowance of at least 1,2 cm (0,5 in) to the foot length. Bear in mind that children who have not yet started to bottom-shuffle or crawl may need less, so add just 1 cm (0,4 in) extra length. The inside length and width of a shoe listed in the sizing chart represents the length and width of its lining in centimeters.
The width of MOE shoes varies depending on the shoe model. Since each child is different, we recommend to measure your child´s foot width. For our shoes, we recommend a width allowance of 0,5-0,7 cm (0,2-0,3 in) which allows toes to move freely and ensures enough growing room.
Please, refer to our sizing chart. If you are not sure which size is the best, contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will help you choose the right shoe size.
An elastic band around the ankle part of the shoes makes them easy to get on, but difficult for babies to remove. If the elastic band is too loose, it is possible to tighten it with a few stitches. Upon request, we can provide this service for you free of charge.
Yes, they are suitable for indoor as well as outdoor use and can be worn all year round. MOE shoes are designed to be worn in dry conditions only. If leather gets wet, it may change its structure and colour.
Because vegetable tanned leather is not chemically sealed, it may be more prone to changing its colour when becoming wet. MOE shoes are not suitable for walking on sharp objects and for rough outdoor terrain.
If our time schedule and stock allows for it, we can make custom-made shoes. For more information, send an inquiry to email@example.com.
All our shoes are designed, hand-cut and sewn in Slovakia. Our knee-high socks are designed and knitted in Slovakia. Each pair passes through our hands before it is released on the market.
Each pair of shoes is packaged in a fabric bag which can be re-used. Knee-high socks are packaged in a paper bag. Subsequently, goods are mostly packaged and shipped in a recyclable paper envelope.
Labels, thanking notes and business cards are printed on eco-paper containing 30% recycled fibres. Natural compounds such as almonds or corn provide for a distinct paper structure and add a unique look.
